2am trip to Vet Emerg

At emerg with my girl. Think good thoughts. 💔

3am update

I thought her bloating was just a prednisone side effect, but the emerg vet thinks it's fluid buildup because of her crappy liver.  Doing an ultrasound now, and will test to see contents of the fluid.

Forgot to mention that greeting us at the hospital door was Rachel from Ruff Haus, so I knew she'd be taken care of.  😀  The emergency vet told me everyone loved Macie, so he was under real pressure from staff to make her feel better.  😀

3:45am update

The fluid is just water.  But her red blood count is only half of her usual.  Suspect internal bleeding, though it's not making it to the fluid in her abdomen.  Now doing a coagulation test.

4:15am update

Coagulation is fine.  He's stumped why she's so anaemic.  Calling to see if they'll see her in Toronto.

4:35am update

Not necessary to take her to Toronto right now, so will wait until morning-morning to contact her internal specialist.  In the meantime, she gets a diuretic to try and get rid of the water, and we'll try to figure out the anaemia asap.  Gonna take her home soon.

Her liver levels all look stable.  Anaemia is worrisome - if it took a few weeks to get to this point, not so bad, but if just this weekend, then scary.

He's making it sound like we're heading into palliative.  All I can think about is how Jasper will ever survive if we lose her.

5:10am update

Taking her home now, with a shot and some meds to try and help the bloating go away.  Will deal with her regular vet and the internal specialist once they open.

5:40am update

Home!  She had an injection of… something (?) as he sent her home.  I've got a prescription for a diuretic which I'll go to the pharmacy for once I wake up.  She's also got Omeprazole and sulcrate suspension to try and control any gastrointestinal bleeding (which he said was the most likely culprit for her anaemia).

I've sent a note to the vet, and told them to call as soon as they get the info - I'll leave my phone on.

But I'm also going to try and get a couple hours of sleep before they open.

Think good red blood cell thoughts!

6:30am update

I am obviously not sleeping.  Every time I hear her shift or breathe, I'm on high alert.  And I'm crying like I haven't cried in years.  Gone are the days when I could just dissociate and just be PracticalLyssa – curse you, therapy!!!  Emotions are hard.

Thank Dog for the Huronia Veterinary Emergency Clinic, and Dr. Tudose for taking care of my sweet baby girl tonight and this morning.  Hoping to get more answers in the coming days, but in the meantime, we've got some meds to try and get things under control.  And I did NOT have to come home to Jasper all by myself, so that's a win, as far as I'm concerned.

6:45am update

Last time I watched the sun rise, there was a hotel room jam and a certain amount of alcohol. I do not like today’s reason at all.

3:40pm update

Macie update:

My neighbourfriend came to keep an eye on Macie while I went to the (human) pharmacy to get the prescription for her diuretic filled.

Unfortunately, the pill is not available in that small a dosage, so the pharmacy is now communicating with the emerg vet to see what the best solution might be.  In the meantime, no diuretic for my girl.  😢

Have a call in to the regular vet, to see if they have anything in stock that might be a good replacement in the meantime.

She seems to have kept both breakfasts down (I split up her regular breakfast, so her tummy wasn't overwhelmed), and has been outside a few times.  She's super-cold, so I've got the fireplace going and Iris (said neighbourfriend) brought her a coat.

She's not whining or moaning like she did last night, but has very little energy still.

The regular vet is sending all the test results, etc., down to the Toronto specialist (who'd already seen her for her ultrasound last month), to determine next steps.

I'm glad she doesn't seem to be in any discomfort today, but wish I could make her feel better.  ❤️‍🩹
